Lezing 20 okt: Architectural Lighting Images - Influence of Visualisation

Images of light are a medium for designers to evoke inspiration, to evaluate concepts and to visualise ideas. Within the designprocess, images are transformed into material. Or an abstract language of signs is converted into lighting objects. Lighting Design is always preceded by a graphic design process.
Various designers reveal their dialectic through individual images: Erich Mendelsohn with sketches, Ben van Berkel with data visualisations and Frank Gehry with cardboard models in combination with a 3D scanner followed by computer aided manufactoring. The question hereby arises whether techniques and their design results can be understood as a response to image techniques of their time? How does digital image production influence architectural design today? In lighting design, the dimension of light is added and influences the image of space significantly. New questions are thereby evoked: How are the images by lighting designers influenced by visualisation techniques? And how are they linked to the techniques that architects use?

Thomas Schielke publishes regularly in Lichtbericht, the magazine of Erco. Erco supports the lecture of Thomas Schielke graciously.
