iLo institute of Lightdesign and the AHK Design and Technology are organising a lecture by Jon M Armstrong in the Culture Club
‘The magic of light’ talk will begin by looking at the strange, intertwined history of magic, space and light. It will then interrogate how the optical and performative techniques of illusion can inform our lighting design practice across the fields of theatre, installation and architecture. Finally, through examples from his own practice, it will suggest a new lens through which to view the making of space and experience.
Jon M Armstrong is a Lighting & Experience Designer based in the UK, whose work merges light, space and magic. For the last 20 years he has worked all over the world, with expertise in light art, theatre, architecture, installation and digital environments.

Jon M Armstrong is a Lighting & Experience Designer based in the UK, whose work merges light, space and magic. For the last 20 years he has worked all over the world, with expertise in light art, theatre, architecture, installation and digital environments.
biography
Jon is also an authority on magic and experience design, and has designed magic effects for traditional, immersive and site-specific work, ranging from large-scale illusions to psychological and suggestion-based effects. He has contributed a chapter on magic and immersion to an Ashgate reader, spoken and performed at the Natural History Museum, the Barbican Centre and the Chicago Magic Lounge, and was recently invited to lecture at the world-famous Magic Circle on magic & light. He is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD in Magic as an Experiential Framework, and is also a Lecturer in Lighting Design & Technology at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama,London.
